Cloth Convertor Guide

Cloth Convertor is a tool to import any 3D cloth skeletal or static model, and export a corresponding interchangeable cloth asset. It is used in the following steps.

1. Import A 3D Cloth Model

Firstly prepare a fbx, dae, obj, dxf or 3ds file which contains a 3D cloth model you want to convert.

Then import it to the middle scene.

During importing, a dialog window is pop up to ask if you want to read as skeletal model if it is. It is recommended to answer "Yes".

2. Separate

If the model is an assembly of multiple adaptable clothes and rigid accessories, separate the rigid accessories first, leave all the adaptable clothes together.

The rigid accessories can be attached to any character using Dress3D.

3. Match

The right scene always contains an interchangeable base character which you need to fit to the cloth by one of the following approaches:

Wrap To Body Inside Cloth If Possible

If the cloth comes with a body inside, Wrap the interchangeable base character to it

Deform By Character Building and Point/Face Matching

You can deform the character by character building and Point/Face matching.

In addition, you can use the thresholding to set the height of the cloth.

You can also edit the cloth at the same time to facilitate the fitting.

4. Decompose

Separate all the adaptable clothes, then process each cloth through the following steps.

5. Merge To One Isolated Mesh

Merge all visible meshes of the cloth to one isolated meshes.

6. Stitch (Optionally)

This step is optional.

To keep the geometric structure of the cloth unchanged during deforming, you may sometimes need to stitch faces using 1, 2 and 3.

7. Configure and Process

Follow the processing flow, in each step:

  • configure processing parameters

  • do automatic processing

8. Export

In the last step of the processing flow, export an interchangeable cloth asset to disk.

9. Test Using Dress3D (Optionally)
